Mining

YAKANI RESOURCES –
MINING EXPLORATION

AKANANI MINING

Akanani Mining, acquired as part of the Lonmin transaction, is an advanced stage exploration project located on the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex, 30km northeast of the town of Mokopane. Extensive exploration drilling, targeting the Platreef, has been conducted on the property and a world class Mineral Resource has been delineated, immediately down-dip and towards the west of the Mogalakwena mine, owned by Anglo American Platinum. The Akanani deposit has a strike length of around 9km and the Platreef ore-body lies at a depth of between 800m and 2,000m. The viable Mineral Resource offers the potential for a long-life, low-cost operation. The wide orebody would enable a fully mechanised, long-hole, open-stope mining operation.

MIRANDA MINERALS HOLDINGS

Miranda Minerals Holdings is a mining exploration company listed on the JSE with prospecting rights in coal, mainly in the KZN area. Yakani had a non-controlling shareholding in this operation.

BOIKARABELO COAL MINE

Boikarabelo is a world-class, low-cost, open-cut coal mine in the Limpopo province’s Waterberg coalfield.

The Boikarabelo Coal Resource stands at 995Mt. Annual production is planned at 6Mt of high-quality product coal, and will supply local and global customers.

Boikarabelo will be connected to an existing rail system that will allow access to domestic markets and the coal terminals of Richards Bay for export shipments by means of a 44km rail loop and link, which will be constructed.

WANACHI POWER CORPORATION

Wananchi Power Corporation (Pty) Ltd exploring two potential prospects for coal in Nigel and Ermelo. The corporation became a significant player in the coal market by entering into joint venture relationships designed to increase scale. The intention was to conduct extensive exploration on its prospects to improve bankability and mine development. This project was later folded into Kumanga Coal.

LESEDI COAL PROJECT

The Lesedi Coal Project is located off the R42 national road, approximately 8km to the immediate north east of the town of Nigel in the Gauteng Province, in an area known for its thermal coal potential.

The prospecting area extends over 3,254.76 hectares, with existing developed infrastructure including a railway line connecting to the main line from Johannesburg to Durban.

An estimated 37 million tons of coal were inferred from historical borehole information acquired from the Council for Geoscience and two economic seams were located within the project area.

LEGACY COAL PROJECT

Wananchi has a prospecting right over a farm in the Ermelo area, covering 2,847.23 hectares. Approximately 100 million tons of inferred in-situ coal were estimated from 23 historical boreholes drilled in the 1980’s and 1990’s with two economic seams in the area with a respective thicknesses of 1.4 and 1.42 meters. The area had a well-established infrastructure with an active railway line though the property. This line is mostly used for coal transportation as it links to the main Richards Bay Coal Terminal coal line in Ermelo.
